DURBAN, South Africa- South Africa's Olympic committee president says the country wants to host the 2022 Commonwealth Games after dropping plans to bid for the 2020 Olympics.
Gideon Sam says South Africa "will go in for 2022" and will submit its bid immediately after the decision is made on the host of the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
Gold Coast in Australia and Sri Lanka's Hambantota are competing for 2018, and the winner will be announced on the Caribbean island of St. Kitts in November.
Sam said Thursday his committee wants to bring the Commonwealth Games to Africa for the first time after a planned bid for the continent's first Olympics in 2020 was abandoned last month on government advice.
Sam said of the Commonwealth Games: "it's never been in Africa so we want to put in a bid."
