KUALA LUMPUR: Pedestrian walkways will be built farther from roads in 151 local councils as part of efforts to combat street crime, Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Chor Chee Heung said on Wednesday.
“By separating walkways from roads, pedestrians will be further away from possible snatch thieves,” he told reporters at the ministry here.
Chor added that the move was an expansion from the Safe City Monitoring Programme, which was carried out in 12 hotspots in the country, including areas under Kuala Lumpur City Hall.
“Since it has been proven to be successful, we are extending it to more areas,” he said, adding that RM36mil was spent to introduce the measures at the 12 hotspots.
He added that among the other measures to be implemented include installing 496 CCTVs at crime-prone areas under 24 local councils by the end of 2012.
"The lighting in areas under 151 local councils will also be increased by July this year as part of the measures to combat crime and improve safety. Besides this, traffic mirrors will be installed in the 151 local councils.
